A brief history of the Latin language
The Latin language, previously one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, has a long and intricate history. Initially spoken in Latium, in central Italy, it evolved from the Italic language of the Iron Age. Latin was introduced to the Western world by Roman authors in the 1st century BC and became an official language of the Roman Empire in AD 98. After the fall of Rome in 476, Latin fell into disuse but was revived during the Middle Ages and continued to be used throughout Europe until its demise as a regional language in 19th-century Europe.
