An android name has a strange job. It must sound like a serial number and a chosen name at once, the way a person with a call sign and a given name can answer to both. Hard consonants snap, the way relays snap shut. Vowels are short, clinical, deliberate. Alphanumeric tails lend a sense of batch and lineage, like a year, a city, a maker's mark. Together they form a name that fits on a maintenance tag and a gravestone, depending on the day.
